The Real Anatomy of Technology
|
The strategy I had going into this project was to just go for it. I didn’t really know what I was doing until I started. For my background I wanted to include patterns and descriptive words. The hardest challenge I had was finding the pieces for my face and hair. Finding the right shades of blonde was very difficult.
The portraits changes your perception of others by the words someone may choose to put on there background. Also the colors they pick and how they view themselves. Yes creating a self portrait can change how people see you by the way you present yourself on paper, but also the things you put in your background to show yourself. Making a portrait on paper you don’t always get the tiny details. You can make yourself look different than you actually do, when your creating a self portrait. In a picture taken of you things are more smooth and blend more naturally. In pictures you can choose what you look like or alter your appearance. I think you can be a lot more creative when creating a self portrait. This piece represents the heart encapsulating a cell phone. This means how people view their cell phones in newer generations. Nowadays we view our cell phones as a part of us and we couldn't live without them, much like the heart and how it’s a part of us and we would die without it. The brain protruding out of the cell phone represents how we rely on our phone much like a brain. We use our cell phones to look up a variety of things because it’s easier than actually thinking. We use our phones as a calculator, dictionary, and a calendar. There is a set of headphones attached to the heart, which represents the metaphor listen to your heart.
With this art piece there was a variety of steps, first to make a sketch and decide the approach you want to take. This project was hard because you had to make anatomy and technology bind together. The approach I took to bind these two things together was to use the veins as a way to combine the two subjects. It’s very important to use the blending technique in this project and to use many colors when coloring one thing. This give the piece dimension and to soften the overall appearance. |
The Value of Words |
The value of words have a major impact on people, knowing what your saying and the intentions you have with using the words is very important. Words connect you with other people in a major way because without words we would have nothing to say and no way to express ourselves. Words have a very powerful impact on people and it’s important we use them in everyday life. There are certain words that have more meaning than other. For example when someone special say “ I love you”.
The words I used in my art project are very special to me. These words are bible verses that have had an impact on my life. My faith is a huge part of my life and that is why I decided to include it in my art. That is also why I included a cross in my art. The mountains represent the ups and downs and the struggles you have overcome some would call it the “climb” in life. I got the inspiration for this piece from a picture on the front of my bible. This is the cross with the shadow and the mountains in the background. There were many techniques used in this type of art like layering the word so the lines appear darker. Another is writing the words larger to have a softer effect on certain areas. The one issue I ran into when creating this piece was the lead smearing, so at the end I had to take an eraser and make the sky white again. I learned that in some areas I had to make the lines darker as I went on making my project. |
Printmaking
|
Printmaking was a great learning experience. This skill takes time and a lot of practice. The most difficult part is making the lines with the sharp tool, also the inking part was hard as well. Trying to put the correct amount of ink onto the block took time and practice. This type of medium taught me how to perfect my art. The fun part of this project was getting to try something new.
My approach to this project was to just go for it. I decided on making turtles because I thought it would turn out cool. I carved out the turtles opposite the big turtle has a white shell, while the little turtles have black shells. This gave my art more contrast and is more interesting to look at. I did a second stamp on the back this was easier the second time. By the time I got to the back I was more experienced and had a better technique. On the back I maked two flowers. I have no reasoning why I picked this other than I thought it would look pretty. I learned you have to ink and look at the stamp and then go back and fix some lines. Overall I liked trying something new and learning about new mediums. |
Automatic DrawingCall to SculptorsSocial Issues |
This project was a challenge for me. Letting go and not being able to control or plan out my art was unusual. The piece I created was interesting and not what I would usually make. But overall I think the piece was fun and creative. The medium of chalk was new and interesting to work with. I really enjoyed working with the chalk and the way I could blend the colors. Chalk is a medium I would love to work with more and getting to experiment with it during this project helped me get to know a new medium.
The other piece I made contained a sunset and mountains. I had no plan for this project as well it was fun to just go for it and see how it would turn out. After the overall project was done I think it turned out great. I like that the lines were not perfect but smeared and very blended. This is a project I would like to work with again and perfect my technique. For this project I was instructed to pick something that had meaning to me, which related to where I lived. With that information I picked a windmill. The reason behind the windmill is because there is one in my town but it also was my great grandpa’s windmill. This is where the inspiration came from I was excited to sculpt something that had meaning to me.
I had some difficulties during this project the structure was larger at the bottom and smaller at the top. The first time I built this it started to crumble at the base, so I had to make the base thicker than the top. The next challenge I ran into was the blades of the windmill. I need them no be big enough to be proportionate to the base but also not to big where they were drooping. This challenge was solved with trial and error. Overall this project was a good experience, it was nice to work with a familiar medium. At the start of this project I knew the medium I wanted to work with was chalk, but I did not know what to include in the piece. As we wrote a list of different social issues I came across women rights. I enjoyed working with the face structure of people so I thought this would be a good fit. I started out with the outline of the girl and then decided to include a thought bubble. The word I put in the bubble is equality this being the main women's right issue. I next decided to make the thought bubble slowly dripping way. This adding more about how the thought of equality has been slipping people's minds.
When using the medium chalk the biggest thing I learned is to layer the colors as much as possible. This helping the color pull through, also using various shades of color and blending them together gives the art more dimension. When applying the chalk the best way to do it is rub the chalk in circular motions on the paper instead of in lines. This helps the chalk blend more seamlessly. Also I applied a darker color to the hollow places in her face this gave her face a more lively look. I loved this project and am overall very proud of how it turned out. |
